Project
The Kennedy Cliff Road in Marseille is a cantilever promenade over the sea, and it comprises two footpaths in two levels divided by the world’s longest bench. This reinforced and prestressed concrete structure has suffered 50 years of constant aggressive marine exposure. In 2016, the Local Authority launched the contract for its rehabilitation and trusted the project of its Design and Construction Management to the setec group.
The project consists of either repairing or replacing the structural elements depending on their diagnosed condition. The design of the project takes the original features of the structure into consideration to minimise the impact, while using the latest civil engineering tools and know-how to provide the structure with a much longer life span.
The new structural elements are executed in high performing concrete. The bench and the parapets are entirely replaced by new ones which are made of ultra-high-performance fibre reinforced concrete (UHPFRC), with synthetic fibres of a very similar colour to the existing concrete.
The assessment of the phasing of the works aims to reduce the impact on the residents and therefore the project was split in four sections of between 300m and 600m long. The programme of works expects the works to be undertaken during the seven fall/winter off-season months of the year to allow the residents to use the structure between May and September. Completion is expected in 2022.
