Infrastructures’ users are provided with safety and comfort
Ventilation and fire safety are dimensioning functionalities in the design of infrastructure. They influence significantly different elements during the life of any project such as the civil engineering design, the choice of facilities or the operational procedures.
setec tpi has a long experience in the design and construction of large infrastructure projects. Its task force of engineers and experts analyse, design and supervise ventilation and fire safety systems, always considering the expected operational performances and applying
Areas of intervention
FSE provides designers with flexibility in the non-standardise projects and rehabilitations. It also provides customised fire safety solutions instead of the standard principles that are either impossible or difficult to implement. FSE’s goal is to ensure a high smoke extraction and fire resistance performance in infrastructure, based on real fire case scenarios.
setec tpi is a competent renowned organism (ORC, in French) by the French Ministry of Interior for the smoke extraction engineering studies.

setec tpi’s understanding and experience in road tunnelling standards is the best foundation for the design and installation of ventilation and smoke extraction systems. Our teams intervene at all stages of the projects, from the feasibility design to the construction design and supervision.
These technical skills add to a high standard in risk management, by the elaboration and control of diagnosis and safety dossiers. Our team is formed by safety experts in underground infrastructure, with a strong experience in fire safety. This renowned expertise by the industry encourages us to keep enhancing and reinforcing it.
The ventilation systems in rail tunnels rely not only on the air quality and fire safety management standards but also on the processes liaised to their decompression and to the dust and heat extraction.
Rail tunnels’ ventilation systems generally include a decompression shaft and air boosting galleries. setec tpi’s experience in the design and construction management of rail tunnels and stations is the best guarantee of an excellent global perspective of a project’s ventilation management.
Many of the existing channel tunnels were built in the 19th century with the development of inland navigation. Nowadays, these infrastructures require a renewal of their ventilation systems in order to ensure air quality and safety in case of fire. The implemented ventilation systems rely on a “longitudinal strategy” based on the installation of air accelerators in the tunnel vault.
Ventilation is a key in underground galleries. These are very constrained and ad-hoc solutions are usually applied. The main challenges in these projects are the complexity of the air dynamics in such interconnected networks, the required air renewal rate is quite high in order to ensure the removal of dust and heat, and the operators safety assurance in such confined spaces.
setec tpi develops and uses its own computing software in order to simulate air dynamics and smoke movements in buildings or underground infrastructure networks. Examples of these softwares are FDS (NIST), Express’air (setec), CFAST (NIST) or Camatt (Cetu). At setec tpi, we also develop tools for the analysis of the results we obtain and their graphical representation so that they are accessible to the public.
The multidisciplinary expertise of setec tpi’s teams in the design and construction management of buildings, structures, transportation infrastructure and complex projects guarantees the efficient integration and performance and the provided technical solutions.
